Your Pathways Explained
To access an ADHD assessment in Berkshire, you must be registered with a local GP. All NHS referrals are managed by Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (not to be confused with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust). At present, self-referral is not available for adults , you’ll need your GP to refer you.
Alternative Assessment Routes
If you’re facing long NHS waiting times, you can use the Right to Choose pathway to be assessed by another NHS-contracted clinic in England. (See our Toolkits & Guides section for step-by-step instructions.)
Private ADHD assessments are also available. Before booking, confirm that your GP will accept a Shared Care Agreement , this is essential if you plan to take medication prescribed privately.
Assessment and Diagnosis
ADHD assessments are carried out by psychiatrists or specialist ADHD nurses. Clinicians will explore your full life history and assess symptoms in different areas of life. All ADHD diagnoses — NHS, Right to Choose, or private — must follow the NICE Guideline on ADHD diagnosis and management.
Treatment and Shared Care
If medication is recommended, it will be initiated by a specialist and can then be transferred to your GP through a Shared Care Agreement. You’ll need annual reviews to monitor safety and effectiveness.
